NEW YORK -- Last night the Avon Foundation recognized two Chicagoans among five outstanding individuals and organizations for their achievement in the fight against breast cancer with the Avon Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer "Pink Ribbon" award in their respective categories.
Craig Jordan, OBE, Ph.D., D.Sc., Director of the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Research Program at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University was honored with the Medical Advancement Award for his groundbreaking work in breast cancer prevention and treatment. Through his role in the development of the breast cancer drug tamoxifen, more than 400,000 women have benefited from effective treatment for their breast cancer. His pioneering research into the biology and chemistry of breast cancer continues to seek the prevention, treatment and cure of the disease, and the improvement of the lives of those with breast cancer.
The Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization, based in Chicago, was honored as a leader in breast cancer Community Advocacy. Y-Me is a national organization with the mission to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone. Now operating in 25 cities, Y-Me reaches the poorest communities with a 24 hour hotline, education, support services, publications and counseling for all women regardless of economic or social circumstances.
