Phone bills these days can be incredibly complicated. In addition to the toll charges and the basic service charge, your bill will probably list many other charges with not-so-descriptive names. Some of these are charges mandated by the federal government and some are charges mandated by state governments. Then there are charges that are not mandatory, but are included specifically to compensate phone companies for the cost of complying with a mandate, such as local-number portability.

Another complication is that you might be billed by several different long-distance providers. On top of all that, phone companies are now starting to assess a "single bill" fee for the service of including both long-distance and local service on a single bill.

Hmm ... Good thing the phone company is there to make it all so simple.
