The high cost of housing and its effect on our economy in California, and in particular San Diego, is a concern of all of us living here.
There is no shortage of stories concerning this increase with dire predictions. What I don't see in print or the media are the real reasons why.
The subject seems to be completely ignored. The assumption, apparently, being that uncontrolled greed of some sort in the building industry is to blame. Why can't we get anyone out there to give us the real story?
My wife and I are San Diego natives. We love this place. I have been a contractor here for 30 years. Like many others who have been around for a long time, our tolerance for the seemingly endless increases in government regulations, fees, delays and lawyers is less than it may be for those who don't remember simpler times. Simply stated, other states do not find it necessary to do the things that we do here in California. Not even close. California needs a good long look at itself.
We need more affordable housing. We could use more condos.
