Blowing in the wind: Orincon's CEO Dan Alspach has sailed his firm through changing winds and shifting currents.

The sailboats on San Diego's two bays offer a good lesson in building a business on government contracts.

The hour the wind comes up determines when you may travel.

The winds determine how fast you can go.

Both the wind and the currents make it easy or difficult to go in a particular direction.

But like a person sailing a small boat, his course was dictated by the direction of federal funding.

At one time Dan Alspach thought his future was in the space program. "I really loved the space program," he said.

At another he was sure it was in antisubmarine warfare.

Alspach, 62, is chairman and CEO of Orincon Corp. International, a San Diego-based information technology company he cofounded in 1973.

The company employs 250 people and had $45 million of revenue in the year ended June 30. Alspach would like to make that $150 million by 2005.
