What do those little three-inch discs with the square-cut sides play on? How can the light from a laser record and play sound? Did I just neuter my cat? He was sleeping on the tower when I burned that CD.
Beginning at the beginning
Compact discs (disks are floppies) were invented in 1979 by Philips, which, along with Sony, settled on standards for the new medium. The four-inch plastic discs (actually 12 centimeters by 1.2 millimeters thick) would hold 74 minutes of sound signal sampled at a rate of 44,100 times a second.
