Pergo AB was earlier a division of Perstorp AB, a Swedish company that was founded 120 years ago for the purpose of manufacturing vinegar for the European food market. As Pergo AB grew, it shifted its focus to specialty chemicals, and in 1923 developed a process for manufacturing decorative laminates for tabletops. It quickly dominated that market.

In 1977 the company originated the idea for laminate flooring and introduced it to the European market in 1984. In the late '80s and early '90s, Pergo began to expand its flooring operations throughout Europe,
