Sheldon Cothran lay wounded in the woods for six days before the sound of his ringing cell phone led searchers to his location, just a few hundred feet from where they'd been looking all along.

Bleeding from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, the 33-year-old father of two survived two freezes and a rain with no food, no water and no shelter.

What he did have was a cell phone, and it was the phone and the tireless efforts of his family, friends, co-workers and the Lane County sheriff's search and rescue team and forest deputies that got him out of the woods alive, his father and stepmother said Tuesday.
