Byron Johnson
A memorial service will be held April 3 for Byron Arthur Johnson of Eugene, who died March 25 following a stroke. He was 88.
Johnson was born on August 27, 1915 in Silverdale, Wash., to Walter and Louisa Ruehl Johnson. He married Mary French in Eastport, Maine, on Dec. 24, 1943. She died March 2, 1991.
He graduated from Marshfield High School in 1934. He lived in Coos Bay for 79 years before settling in Eugene four years ago.
He served in the Navy Seabees during World War II and was stationed in New Guinea and The Philippines. He was employed as a millwright at Evans Products Co. and Weyerhaeuser. He also worked as a carpenter.
His interests included carpentry and making furniture. He enjoyed golf, gardening, fishing and reading. He especially enjoyed spending time with friends and family, particularly his nieces and nephews.
He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Coos Bay and he belonged to the First Baptist Church in Eugene.
Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Johnson of Springfield and Betsy Ouchida of Lake Oswego; a sister, Esther Humbert of Pasco, Wash.; and one grandchild.
Saturday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Coos Bay. Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church in Coos Bay.
Verna Amick
Verna McCarthy Amick of Eugene died March 24 of age-related causes. She was 90.
Amick was born April 22, 1913 in Litchville, N.D., to Louis and Mary Ann Straub McCarthy. She married Loyd Amick in East Grand Forks, Minn., on June 8, 1941. He died Sept. 16, 2003.
She attended schools in Litchville and received a bachelor's degree from Valley City State College in North Dakota. She lived in Whitefish, Mont., before settling in Eugene in 1950.
