In the ongoing SUV debate, much has been said about one's "right to own" such vehicles on the basis of individual choice or on one's ability to legally afford to buy them. There is much more to it than that.

The question extends beyond one's ability to afford an SUV. As in all actions, there are consequences. In this case, the decision to buy an SUV includes contributing to the rapid depletion of a finite resource. Also, the quality of the air we breathe is affected, and the destruction of the ozone layer that protects all life on this planet is increased. See the article "Key 'greenhouse gases' reach record levels," Register-Guard, March 21.

While Dennis Baker (letters, March 22) and his ilk have a right to drive what they want, they also need to consider the effects of their actions beyond themselves. They do not live in a vacuum. How do these actions affect the health of the planet and our fellow beings? We are all interconnected, and all of our actions do have consequences. Let's enlarge our perspectives.
