CRESWELL - Fire engines, classic cars and hundreds of townspeople turned out Monday night to celebrate The Little Team That Could: Creswell High School's 2004 state championship boys basketball team.

A sudden, chilly wind didn't stop residents from lining Oregon Avenue and jamming the Civic Center to cheer a team that had only one player taller than 6-foot-1, yet defeated bigger opponents with its aggressive defense and consistent hard work.

In many respects, however, this parade also honored The Little Town That Could: Creswell's third Class 3A crown came after it completely cut athletic funding from its school budget.

"This is a celebration of much more than the success of these team members and coaches," Creswell High principal Jan Ophus said. "This is a really big deal for the entire community, which raised $130,000 privately to provide...
