Birds do it. Bees do it. But the barn owls in Itasca can't do anything without a permit.

The nocturnal duo has just received permission from the federal government to be fruitful and multiply. It'll be the second time this endangered species will be allowed to breed since the barn owls' arrival at Spring Brook Nature Center two years ago.

But now the nature center's staff is hoping for more permits - this time, ones that could make their barn owls something of state celebrities in the raptor world.

The predatory twosome, who came to Itasca from a Peoria zoo that closed down, could become pioneers in the state's only Barn Owl Reestablishment Program. The nature center hopes to develop a program that would eventually reintroduce these rare birds back...
