Visiting national forests in the Pacific Northwest is about to get cheaper.

Those who hike, picnic or stop to take in the scenery will no longer have to buy a Northwest Forest Pass to visit 385 sites in Oregon and Washington starting May 1.

The U.S. Forest Service will drop that many trailheads and other areas from the controversial fee program, reducing the total number of day-use sites where the fee still will be required to 679 in the two states.

No-fee sites in the two states will rise to 1,681.

In the Eugene-based Willamette National Forest, the fee-site cut is steep.

The forest is dropping 77 of its 143 forest pass sites, mostly remote trailheads.
