Michigan leads competing states in prescription-drug use and employers' share of health-insurance costs, and those are among key factors pushing up health care premiums, according to a study to be released this week.

The study, commissioned by the Michigan Economic Development Corp., lays out findings and strategies for Michigan to consider to improve business competitiveness with other states and rein in escalating health care premiums.

Chuck Hadden, vice president of government affairs for the Michigan Manufacturers Association, said the study "is a good start'' toward addressing major business issue.
