Granholm policies target outsourcing

Gov. Jennifer Granholm issued new contracting policies she said would help keep jobs related to state contracts and services in Michigan.

Among the policies is an executive directive that reinforces preferences to Michigan-based companies in contracting and requires the Michigan Department of Management and Budget to set up a process to certify companies as such.

Granholm said that vendors who do not disclose their outsourcing activities will be barred from doing state business. "This is a strong stand to protect Michigan and U.S. jobs from being sent overseas, something we can ill afford in this anemic national job recovery,'' she said in a news release.

But the Detroit Regional Chamber expressed concern over the directives, and said government should focus on providing incentives for companies to expand business within Michigan.
