Southeast Michigan companies are less inclined to freeze salaries in 2004 than in recent years, but the thaw on salaries isn't likely to mean bigger raises this year for salaried employees, according to a survey conducted by the Southfield-based American Society of Employers.

The 360 respondents said pay hikes would average a modest 3.5 percent for 2004, about the same as the past three years. Only 14 percent of companies surveyed said they planned salary freezes, compared with 20 percent in 2003 and 27 percent a year earlier.
