Steelmakers need trade help

I read Terry Kosdrosky's article, ("Suppliers steel for disaster,'' March 15) with interest. Steel producers across the board are working with each and every customer during the current crisis seeking to fulfill their orders. However, in response to alarmist headlines about pricing, it is important to keep the historical picture in perspective.

Before President Bush put the steel tariffs in place in early 2002, more than one-third of the domestic steel industry was in bankruptcy because illegal trade had driven prices to unsustainably low levels. The tariffs provided a breathing period during which the domestic steel industry was able to consolidate, restructure and strengthen from within. Without the safeguard, additional U.S. steel capacity would have been eliminated, making the current situation much more dire.

In addition to the jump in raw material costs and high shipping costs caused largely by red-hot demand from China, which Kosdrosky mentions, another significant factor is energy costs, which...
