In all the discussion about the debacle in Iraq, one of the silliest and most offensive arguments that supporters of the US-led invasion have resorted to is that anyone who raises doubts about the prospect of Iraq becoming a liberal democracy in the near future is guilty of racism. Pamela Bone (Age 17/5/04) recently wrote that 'it is a kind of racism to think that Iraqis ... do not want the same freedoms we have or are somehow not capable of handling democracy'.

This charge of racism goes hand in hand with the claim that those who doubt America's idealism in seeking to liberate and democratise Iraq are being, in Janet Daley's words in the London Telegraph (26/5/04), 'deeply cynical and selfish'. George Bush is right, according to Daley, to regard personal liberty as 'an absolute and inviolable good'; and right, too, in wanting to bring to Iraq the 'two conditions most conducive to peace and prosperity ... liberal democratic government and free-market economics'.
