If the unbelievably tragic events of Sept. 11 taught us all a lesson, it's that anything can happen at any time, and the unpredictability of the results in terms of loss of human life and property can be devastating.

Certainly, that infamous, ugly event was tragic for the families and friends of unfortunate victims. But it also proved devastating to many businesses as far as their ability to absorb a powerful, debilitating blow and still have the capabilities and resources to resume operations at the same level of business activity as before.

We saw all too clearly, and painfully, that a person could wake up in the morning, go to work, and not come home that evening.

It now serves as a sobering reminder of how unprepared some businesses are to face emergencies and disasters that involve loss of life, property or revenue.
