How can you create packaging that appeals to kids? The answer is simple -- just ask them to design it.

Last October, Hawaiian Punch launched an on-line, package design contest. It invited its core market -- 12- to 15-year-old, multicultural "tweens and teens -- to update the look of its labels on 20-ounce bottles.

The contest ran on Bolt.com, a leading Internet site for teens.

"Today's teenagers define what is hip and cool in the marketplace, so who is better to help design our new packaging than these trend-setting young adults," says Matt Smith, brand manager for Hawaiian Punch.

Smith reports that Hawaiian Punch received about 400 design ideas -- about double the amount it expected. "We got a broad range of ideas....
