Article Excerpt It is one of the cruel ironies of childrearing that after waiting a year or two for their child to start speaking, parents then have to spend another couple of years trying to figure out precisely what it is their child is saying. Quite often, the speech of a toddler is unintelligible; and even when it can be understood, it sometimes fails to make a great deal of sense.
What mothers and fathers must realize is that language and thought are tied closely together, and that it isn't until the second birthday or so that children become true "thinkers." Furthermore, once they are clearly thinking, they are not necessarily thinking clearly. Just as it took them many months to become familiar with their bodies and develop the ability to control their movements, it takes them quite a while to get acquainted with mental processes and learn how to use those processes effectively and efficiently.
Consequently, the art of communicating does not spring instantaneously in full form. Words are symbols for objects, actions, events, qualities, and relationships--and it takes time to learn not only individual labels for everything, but...
