A college professor who is also a former Vietnam combat medic provides insight into the mental evolution of students whose first language is not English. In this first novel, the author portrays what he describes as a typical scenario in higher education--one in which these students are not only misunderstood but are treated as if they are the accumulation of all of the stereotypes foisted upon them by the larger society.

One college English professor becomes a hero in the eyes of the students when he emphasizes how much he really believes in their abilities and attempts to help them adjust to and succeed in the higher education system. On the other hand, the rest of the faculty at this institution feel that he is coddling students who don't have the potential to succeed as evidenced by their scores in introductory English classes. This is really a story about the use and abuse of power in higher education, where faculty members have all the power and students have none.

What I like best about this story is how the author has set up the dialogue with the characters. We first hear what the professor thinks about a situation and then the author allows the student to share his thoughts with the audience. The reader can then see how vastly different the two viewpoints are about the same issue.
