Q. Please tell me the difference between Sugar Maple and Silver Maple? Do they make good yard trees?

A. Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is the so-called "hard" or "rock" maple, producing some of the highest quality lumber known. It makes an excellent ornamental and is the standard tree for making maple syrup. Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum) is a fast growing, large maple, tolerant to wet areas. It too produces sap for syrup. Its leaves are deeply cut and silvery underneath. Its fall foliage is yellow-red. Some landscapers hesitate to recommend it because Silver Maple is somewhat "weak wooded." Both trees are used in landscaping. There is no such thing as a perfect yard tree.

Q. Last year I planted three varieties of tomatoes. They started out well, but in August they turned brown, wilted, and died. What caused this? Is there a variety we can grow that won't get this problem?

A. Your tomatoes had a common disease, Early Blight (Alternaria solani), which also affects potatoes. This fungus grows well in the cool, damp nights in late summer and early fall. To us, Early Blight is the number-one disease of tomatoes. It defoliates tomato plants, reducing fruit production and quality. The seed catalogs tell about disease-resistant varieties, but that doesn't mean the plants won't get diseases. It just means that some have more resistance...
