Article Excerpt Getting on a bike has always been more risky than strapping yourself into a "cage"--the motorcyclists' term for car. You're inherently less protected, and you're less visible to other (sometimes totally oblivious) drivers. And, if an accident does occur--no matter who happens to be at fault, legally speaking--the motorcyclist always loses.
Most motorcyclists are acutely aware of the risk they're exposed to and ride accordingly. They always assume--and anticipate--that the worst will happen so they're prepared to take evasive or other action as necessary, before it becomes necessary. For example, a good rider does not assume the guy in the car in the next lane actually sees him, or that the woman about to pull out into traffic up ahead is aware there's a motorcycle in her intended lane.
Still, accidents and deaths involving motorcycles are increasing substantially. But this is not because motorcycling, as such, is more dangerous than it used to be. Rather, it's because there are more inexperienced riders out there than ever before, many of them riding bikes with power-to-weight ratios (and acceleration ability) superior to the most elite high-performance sports cars.
