Le communique publie a l'issue du Sommet indique que les negociations sur un nouvel accord commercial debuteront cette annee. L'accord ira "au-dela des problemes traditionnels d'acces aux marches et offrira des resultats concrets a nos milieux d'affaires en reduisant les obstacles reglementaires freinant le commerce et les investissements." Cependant, l'accord final ne devrait pas intervenir avant trois ans. Selon les deux parties, ce document devrait aller bien au-dela des negociations, bloquees au sein de l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC), en matiere d'acces aux marches pour les investisseurs et de commerce des services. Selon Jim Peterson, ministre canadien du Commerce, cet accord est une sorte d'"OMC a la puissance dix". Son but n'est pas de reduire les droits de douane sur les produits industriels ni de s'attaquer aux obstacles non tarifaires dans les echanges de produits agricoles tels que les subventions.
