Thursday's indictment of Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga sends one message to businesses that contribute to political action committees: Wake up.
The reason?
PACs played a critical role in the indictment of Marlinga, Sen. Jim Barcia, D-Bay City, and Ralph Roberts, a Warren real estate broker.
The men are charged with exceeding campaign contribution limits. Marlinga and Roberts also face charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Marlinga and Barcia also are charged with making a false statement to the Federal Election Commission on finance reports. Penalties include up to 20 years in prison.
Donors and recipients alike should take notice, said Craig Ruff, president and CEO of Lansing-based Public Sector Consultants Inc., a nonpartisan public policy think tank. Ruff said the indictment would likely affect the political contribution world the way scandals...
