Shrimp cultivation catching on as supplement to catfish. (Focus Delta & River Cities).

STONEVILLE -- The technology has been around for a while to produce freshwater shrimp, also known as prawns, in Mississippi. But now the industry has taken an important step forward with two factors. First, two freshwater shrimp hatcheries located in the state now supply economical seed stock. And, second, a downturn in the catfish industry has sent farmers looking for alternatives to supplement their income.

Dr. Jim Steeby, area extension agent for aquaculture at the Mississippi State University (MSU) National Warmwater Aquaculture Center, said having a substantial hatchery in the Delta now to supply the freshwater shrimp/prawns is a big help in expanding the industry in that region.

"We've actually struggled over the past 10 years with having an adequate supply of the post larvae to stock ponds," Steeby said. "It was a great effort to go all the way to Texas to secure seed stock."
