TRACK capacity can be cut by 50 to 70% when part of a double-track line is closed for maintenance. Trains in normal service pass each other on adjacent tracks but with one track closed one train must wait until the remaining track is cleared, Further delays can be caused by additional stops, speed restrictions, or signalling restrictions on the remaining track.
