Article Excerpt In February, Integrated Sensing Systems (ISSYS, Ypsilanti, MI, 734-547-9896)(www.mems-issys.com)reported receiving a $600,000, two-year Phase II SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grant from NASA. The Phase II grant follows ISSYS' successful completion of Phase I proof-of-concept work.
The Phase II work will focus on the research and development of miniaturized, wireless, and implantable MEMS capacitive pressure sensors for monitoring cardiovascular blood pressure and blood flow in animals in spacecraft and in humans with cardiovascular difficulties. The sensors measure pressure and differential pressure (to infer a flow measurement). ISSYS, moreover, is at an advanced stage on the development of a similar device for monitoring hydrocephalus (elevated pressure of the brain).
The development of an implanted wireless, batteryless, miniature sensor (coupled with a handheld reader) that is capable of providing chronic, non-invasive measurement of blood pressure and flow will help lead to advances in the tailored treatment of chronic diseases (i.e., conjestive heart failure and hydrocephalus) and could eventually enable home care treatment, noted Dr....
