One of the criticisms I constantly hear is we don't spend enough time covering issues affecting small businesses.

Though 95 percent of what we write about deals with small business, there is some truth to that. Small businesses -- defined by the SBA as companies ranging from 1 to 500 employees -- make up about 95 percent of San Diego's business landscape, and they can get brushed aside in the media's scramble to cover the Qualcomms, the Sempras and the SAICs. Big business equals big money, which of course, equals big news.

Many small firms fly under our radar screen. Some prefer it that way.
