HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) today said that there are cracks in the foundation of the state's hospitals, despite some slight improvements documented in "Financial Analysis 2001: An Annual Report on the Health of Pennsylvania's Hospitals." The new report was released today by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4), and it examined data for the year ending June 30, 2001.

"The report shows the likely effects of initial payments from the tobacco settlement fund on the level of hospital uncompensated care," said Carolyn F. Scanlan, president and CEO of HAP....
