Article Excerpt Gail Goldberg doesn't just talk the talk; she walks the walk -- literally
As San Diego's planning director and chairwoman of the San Diego/Tijuana chapter of the Urban Land Institute, Goldberg is an advocate for smart growth, a land-use philosophy coined by ULI, which combines housing with access to transportation and jobs.
About 18 months ago, Goldberg put theory into practice and moved into a condominium in Downtown San Diego. She walks to work, restaurants and shopping.
"I think the quality of my life has improved," she says. "I think more people want that option and we need to make it more attainable."
The city is in the process of updating its general plan, which addresses growth and development, including housing. It hasn't been updated since 1979.
Goldberg grew up in San Bernardino, where her parents and brothers still live. She lived in San Jose and Riverside before moving to San Diego in 1972 with her husband, who was starting a new company.
Goldberg attended college, but married before she earned a degree. While her two sons were growing up, she stayed home with them.
