Cornerstone Schools hopes to net $5 million in proceeds from its Arnold Palmer Turning Point Invitational, a feat that would put the group in rare company.

To date, only a handful of nonprofits in the Detroit area have been able to net $1 million or more, after expenses, from a one- or two-day fund-raising event.

But events in that range have become more common the past couple of years, in spite of the soft economy, said Peter Remington, president of nonprofit consulting firm The Remington Group. "They're taking the event and surrounding it with something, whether it's a campaign or strong leadership.''
