Twelve-year-old Jon Krausfeldt thought he would make a little money this summer umpiring youth baseball games - for $8 a game.

Krausfeldt even went to two weeks of training to get ready for the season in Lisle.

Then park district officials told him he could not be paid because he was too young.

Instead, he's willing to work as a volunteer for two years until he's 14, then get back pay for his efforts.

That's just one of the ways youth sports groups throughout the suburbs are trying to deal with a recent state crackdown on paying children to be umpires.
