While cuadros de castas have been known in both the Old and New Worlds since the eighteenth century, critical commentary on this genre in the context of social hierarchy in Mexico dates back only to the beginning of the twentieth century, and studies devoted to the paintings themselves weren't published until the late 1980s and the 1990s. Along comes Professor Carrera's book, which achieves a signal advancement in our knowledge of casta painting and should be read by anyone interested in eighteenth-century Spanish America and Spain.

In her Introduction, "Visual Practices in Late-Colonial Mexico," the author clearly states the goal of the numbered Chapters that follow: to "investigate how certain artistic practices of eighteenth-century New Spain visually conceptualized specific social and political constructions of the people of urban New Spain"...
