The "32" is here.

Billed as the precursor to the boys state tennis tournament in just four short weeks, the Tom Pitchford Tennis Invitational or Hersey-32 begins at 2 p.m. today at selected sites around the area.

Saturday will start promptly at 8 a.m. with third place, semifinals and finals scheduled at Hersey to go on after 1 p.m.

Most of the top singles and doubles players around the state will be on hand to either fortify their status among the elite ... or to make enough of an impression to increase their chances of a better seed come tourney time.

"I've got hundreds of cards with results on players from all over the state ... but coming here and getting some quality matches in two days can really help some of these kids," says Mike McConville, who oversees not only this tourney, but also state, along with a committee of coaches from around Illinois.

Following last weekend's schedule of tennis, McConville could be found in his office at Hersey in the wee hours of this past Monday, sorting through faxes and stacks of...
