Just days before his induction into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Tom Maple is continuing to outdo himself.

The stubble on his face attests.

"I was talking to Sara," says Maple, referring to his stepdaughter, "and I was telling her that for some reason I set a record.

"I haven't shaved for three days in a row."

Tom Maple hasn't lost his stroke, however. Leave it to him to appreciate another one of the subtle pleasures in life, which he makes sure never goes too fast. The old coach knows when to take a timeout so he can scratch his whiskers, be himself and admire things that, to some people, might not seem worth admiring.

Like a 3-day-old beard. Like a competitive basketball game that his team lost.

Like a colorful bird pecking away on a feeder or balancing on a thin branch.

Maple may have retired as Grant High School's varsity boys basketball coach after the 1999-2000 season, after 25 seasons and 368 victories (the most for any boys basketball coach at a Lake County school), but he still likes to talk about focusing and shooting.
