...history about suppliers. People new the training and performance profession aren't always aware of the role external suppliers have played in its development. I acknowledge that I have a bias, and I contend that many of the significant advances in program content and refinements in delivery have come from suppliers. Further, the quality of trainers inside companies has been elevated significantly by products and approaches developed by suppliers. Many corporate trainers proudly put their supplier certifications on their resumes.
Suppliers originate new concepts and training methods and invest heavily in their development. The content and delivery of their programs are constantly being refined. Suppliers develop measurement tools and have often led the way in the rigorous evaluation of behavioral change and organizational impact. Experience in how to implement a program effectively in one firm is aggregated with implementation experience in other firms, and those experiences benefit every client organization the supplier serves. In addition, the process of training trainers to deliver a program is being improved continually.
Suppliers can provide well-written, nicely crafted participant materials because they're printed in large quantities. Major investments in video and other instructional tools can be amortized through their use by many different client companies. The net effect, for example, is that a mid-size meat packing company in the Midwest gains access to stare-of-the-art training that previously was available only to the big boys--and girls.
The dissemination of behavioral modeling as a major improvement in developing effective supervisory skills is another example of suppliers' contributions to learning. An exception to the usual pattern regarding new ideas developed...
