Although use of the Internet and email has helped make employees more productive, questions of Internet safety have been on the minds of users in light of massive virus attacks and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
In May 2000, the "I Love You" Virus infected computers on the Internet, disrupting the communications of hundreds of thousands of computers and causing losses estimated in the billions of dollars. In addition to the monetary loss, companies and individuals who found their computers infected also discovered this virus had accessed the user's computer passwords and sent them electronically to a computer in a foreign country. Reports from U.S. investigations found that the September 11 hijackers communicated using encrypted messages embedded in pornographic material online.
In light of these discoveries, many people may be asking the question: Is it even safe to use the Internet?
