Many creatures that forage along the Oregon Coast dunes and beaches consider snowy plover eggs a delicacy. That's one reason that the small, shy shorebirds have been listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act since 1993.
Among those that regularly dine on plover eggs and chicks are crows, ravens, gulls, skunks, feral cats, raccoons and red foxes - the latter a species introduced in the dunes south of Bandon that is increasing in population.
Officials of agencies that manage the land where Oregon's small plover population lives have decided that better predator control is needed if Oregon's plovers, which number only 111 birds, are ever to recover.
That's why this month they will start allowing the killing of plover predators.
"It's controversial with biologists and among land managers," said Larry Mangan, a senior wildlife biologist with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which oversees much of Oregon's plover habitat.
"But we've tried as much as we can with nonlethal means in the past. And we've come to the conclusion that we really can't recover the species in Oregon without more predator management."
