THE U.S. MAY be faulted in many ways for its handling of the war in Vietnam, including an arrogance of power and an insensitivity to the people we were fighting for. We were on the way toward correcting those faults when we committed the most egregious error, that of abandoning our ally to an aggressive and vengeful enemy. Because of this, much of the responsibility for what befell the South Vietnamese in general, and in particular those soldiers who fought against the communists, rests on our country's shoulders.

Colonel Edward Metzner served as an advisor to South Vietnamese military commanders during his four tours of duty in Vietnam, most of that time in the Mekong Delta's least secure areas. His memoir More Than a Soldier's War (Texas A&M, 1995) recounts his experiences supporting the Vietnamese in their efforts to create a viable nation.
