AS THE DAUGHTER of a smoker, I feel that I must take a deep breath and utter a few words in support of Johnita DeMatteo. DeMatteo is the nicotine-stained mother recently ordered by a New York State Supreme Court justice nor to smoke in her house or car. The judge was responding to a complaint from her thirteen-year-old-son, Nicholas, subject of a custody battle, about the maternal puffing.

Why on earth would anybody indulge the sensibilities of an allergy-free, thirteen-year-old regarding a parental behavior that is neither illegal nor immoral and which many find pleasurable? I don't happen to be a smoker, but I'm appalled that a judge would, without compelling reasons--i.e.,...
