Article Excerpt Dear Colleague,
Our lives were irrevocaly changed on September 11, 2001 Last year's conference began a transformation that challenged every person to re-evaluate their priorities, goals, and aspirations and to commit to a vision of pediatric nursing that will honor our shared values. Can quality care coexist within the rapidly changing health care environment? What will the future hold for children and families and the nurses who care for them? Can health care be transformed to honor relationships, diversity, and the holistic needs of children, families, and their caregivers? Will there be enough pediatric nurses to care for children who need their specialized knowledge and skill? As never before, pediatric nurses have unique opportunities to embrace alternative models for delivering health care that is innovative, flexible, and cost effective. Changes in the health care system have also created new opportunities for innovative nursing roles in a variety of settings. Pediatric nurses must, therefore, continually strive to keep abreast of changes in health care and clinical nursing practice and develop new skills to meet the changing needs of the patients they serve. Join us for the 18th Annual Pediatric Nursing Conference.
This conference offers pediatric nurses practicing in a variety of acute care, home, community, school, rehabilitative, and long-term settings a balance of essential information for providing patients and families with excellent clinical care and strategies for renewing ourselves. Each of the 6 plenary and 25 concurrent sessions will address key issues in pediatric nursing. Leading nurse clinicians, educators and researchers have been selected to offer participants contemporary, state-of-the-art information. Additionally, prominent child health issues, public policy, and professional concerns will be addressed.
Two Intensive Workshops -- First Do No Harm: Children and Violence and The Fifth Vital Sign: Pediatric Pain Assessment and Management -- are offered in conjunction with the annual conference. Join colleagues and nursing leaders to learn about the impact of violence on children and families or take advantage of the opportunity to enhance your skills in pediatric pain management. Pre-registration for these exciting offerings is required (see registration form on page 17 for details).
A poster session will be held on Saturday morning and will feature research selected from peer reviewed abstract submissions and clinical posters exemplifying innovative practice and programs. In conjunction with the conference, participants will have an opportunity to meet and discuss research questions with leading nurse researchers. A new addition to the program is the opportunity for participants to care for their bodies, minds, and spirits by receiving the benefits of seated massage throughout the day on Saturday. The program also features opportunities to network with colleagues and enjoy the hospitality of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. Over 50 exhibitors from around the country will display their products and information services to conference attendees.
This educational activity, for a maximum of 21.7 contact hours, is provided by Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc., an accredited provider of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation (ANCC-COA). Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc. is also an approved provider of continuing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing, CEP5387. ANCC-COA approved continuing education credits are accepted by many certification programs, including NAPNAP.
Don't miss this exciting opportunity to collaborate with your pediatric colleagues, share your innovative ideas, and catch the enthusiasm of nurses who are proud to call themselves pediatric nurses.
Best Wishes,
Cynda Hylton Rushton, DNSc, RN, FAAN 2002 Conference Chairperson
