Though there was little need for a reminder, staying literally across the street from the highest skyscraper in the Southern Hemisphere, Melbourne's Rialto Tower provided a stark reminder of the atrocities of September 11 about 10 days before.

Nonetheless, chemical engineers are not easily daunted. Despite many corporate edicts constraining travel in the wake of the destruction of the Twin Towers, participation in the 6th World Congress of Chemical Engineering remained strong. Overall, only 60 delegates (4% of the registrants) cancelled in the 10 days before its opening on September 23, 2001. It remained a huge and highly successful event.

Appropriately for a world gathering of chemical engineers, the focus was on a series of plenary 'vision' sessions, from which I've extracted some of the key messages.
