The 2001 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, in Stockholm, Sweden. The award rewards three chemists for their development of catalytic asymmetric synthesis. Half of the award is shared by Dr. William S. Knowles and Professor Ryoji Noyori for their work on chirally catalyzed hydrogenation reactions and the other half goes to Professor K. Barry Sharpless for his work on chirally catalyzed oxidation reactions. The discoveries of these chemists have impacted academic research, the development of new drugs and materials, and are used in many industrial syntheses of drugs and other biologically active substances. In his presentation speech, Professor Per Ahlberg reminded us that, in Nobel's will, he wrote that the prize should be awarded to those who "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind."
