Packaging of elastomers has been a difficult issue for decades. Everyone agrees that it would be a Good Thing if the issues could be resolved and we all started using standard bale sizes. Unfortunately, practical difficulties have got in the way.

Packaging has to be effective, that is the whole reason for using it. In the tyre industry and many others, the biggest threat to quality comes from contamination. Small particles of grit, ash or wood can become stress concentrators if they find their way into a finished product. Under cyclic loading as in an anti-vibration mount or a tyre, such stress concentrators become the starting point for cracks, and eventually, the point of failure.
