...Avmin signed development agreement with ZCCM and the Zambian Government, which gave Avmin the rights to own and operate the existing Chambishi copper and cobalt toll treatment plant as well as the Nkana slag dump.

The plant is located on the Copperbelt between Kitwe and Ndola and is operated by Chambishi Metals (Avmin 90% and the Zambian Government 10%). Chambishi Metals continues to toll-treat concentrates through the existing roast/leach/electrowinning (RLE) plant. This comprises a roaster, an acid plant, a leach and precipitation-based cobalt purification process and a copper tankhouse, as well as a cobalt tankhouse and degassing facility. Copper is electrowon from the leach solution to produce copper cathodes and a bleed stream is fed to the cobalt recovery circuit where it passes through several purification steps to remove metal impurities. Cobalt cathodes are then electrowon from the purified solution.

The existing plant toll-treats about 130,000 t/y of concentrate from Copperbelt-based suppliers producing approximately 2,500 t/y of cobalt and between 10,000 and 15,000 t/y of copper as well as 60,000 t/y of sulphuric acid.
