Article Excerpt In a year that will be forever defined by the atrocities of 9/11, it seemed for a while improbable that 2001 could bring any good news or cause for celebration. Yet, remarkably, the year brought an abundance of both, only to end with more sadness in the death, December 10th, of a beloved friend and colleague, Harrison Hayford (1916-2001), who served as President of the Society on four occasions (the first in 1955, the last as recently as 1999) and was everyone's model editor, scholar, and critic during a long and fruitful career. We will miss him dearly, but his example and legacy, are ours to keep.
Harry Hayford gave much of his personal library to the Society a year before he died. Not long before that, another great Melville scholar, the late Merton M. Sealts, Jr., made a similar bequest. Both gifts were made with the hope of helping the Society to establish a Melville gallery and cultural center. Thanks to the generosity and vision of these men, that hope is suddenly becoming a reality. I am pleased and excited to report that, in our recent referendum, the membership overwhelmingly supported the Executive Committee's recommendation for the Society to affiliate with the Old Dartmouth Historical Society and the New Bedford Whaling Museum/Kendall Institute-- 127 to 2.
