Understanding the animal kingdom has been a lifelong quest for many scientists. Beginning Tuesday, PBS viewers can join the quest, glimpsing hidden worlds that contain examples of an evolutionary timeline begun millions of years ago.

"The Shape of Life," produced by Sea Studios Foundation for National Geographic Television and Film and PBS, looks deeper into the question of biological beginnings through a series of eight, one-hour episodes (shown in two-hour blocks) exploring the eight major body plans that virtually all animal life is built upon.

To bring rarely seen animals to the screen, the group devised new photographic equipment and technologies that can capture magnificent creatures and their behaviors.

Where cameras cannot take the human eye, computer animation provides additional details based on scientific breakthroughs in biology, genetics and paleontology that are rewriting...
