Elssner aims to show that what the third (Catholic, second) commandment forbids is perjury, including any careless oath (12; Rashi) and by extension perhaps false prophecy and magic (13, 29). The name of God YHWH (with "Elohim" in the commandment) is focused chiefly in view of the later reverential prohibition of even speaking it. E. pays scant attention to how this third/second would differ from the ninth/eighth, and none at all to profanity or irreverent expletive use of God's name (1-4, 271-293 summations).
