The long struggle to build a waterfront Convention Center hotel in San Diego's Downtown may finally be coming to an end.

Two recent events--the promise of a large-scale booking and paperwork that lays the groundwork for financing--indicate the facility many consider to be the missing piece needed to bring more business to an underused San Diego Convention Center is on track to open in mid-2007.

Two weeks ago, the International Association of Fire Fighters, with a push from the San Diego City Firefighters Union, Local 145, decided to host its 2008 convention in San Diego--based at the yet-to-be-built Hilton San Diego Convention Center Hotel.

Armed with a letter from Chris Pfohl, regional vice president of development for Hilton Hotel Corp., referencing "a planned opening" in 2007, and marketing materials...
